Hello! to all the pet-lovers in the world. I hope that everybody is well, and your pets are too. Today, we are going to know about the story of Bretagne the dog. Bretagne was a golden retriever who honored the name by serving at ground zero of World Trade Centre on 9/11 in Twin Towers New York (USA). And she named as one immortal hero.
Her date of birth was August 25, 1999. And she has been trained by her owner Denise Corliss from the age of eight weeks. Again, Denise Corliss was a volunteer firefighter with the Cy-fair firefighting department.
The Story of Bretagne the Dog:
Now, the tragic day that the Twin Towers came down, Bretagne and her handler Denise Corliss were deployed with dedication to help find survivors at Ground Zero. And they were among a group of search-and-rescue canines deployed to ferret out any living persons still amid the rubble.
Bretagne’s assignment was to search for any indication about life underneath the rubble. So, she and other rescue workers spent days working in the debris with firefighters, police officers and others. While other dogs may have been scared, Bretagne remained brave despite the dangers and tragedy that surrounded her. Moreover, she always remained hopeful in hopeless situations and never lost a sliver of that hope.
Denise and Bretagne put in such long hours, under harsh conditions most of the time. But the mercy crews would soon discover that they had been answered. A number of pedestrians were still breathing buried in the rubble, bringing to tears relief groups and families waiting hopefully for more word.
Finally, when there was nothing left to be found, after days and weeks of searching, Bretagne’s mission came to an end. She was now considered a hero – admired everywhere and received in her home country as well.
Other Missions and Community Services:
Over the years, Bretagne served as a search and rescue dog with her longtime handler Denise. Additionally, she went on to conduct search and rescue mission post-hurricanes Rita, Katrina and Ivan. Where she even found mass survivors. She also shared her love for therapy work in the community, serving as a therapy dog to countless people at hospitals, schools and nursing homes.
However, upon retiring at nine years old, Bretagne retained her role as a reading dog in the community schools. Bretagne was such a good listener that even shy first graders felt comfortable reading to the golden retriever.
The story of Bretagne, which made news around the world, captured hearts everywhere. In times of grief, she remains an icon for inspiration, compelling the human race to prove how strong its compassion and kindness is.
Bretagne died in 2016 at sixteen years old. But her memory continues. Firefighters from the firefighting department were lining pavement and she was welcomed with salutes as Bretagne approached the animal hospital in Cypress, Texas. Then, when search and rescue crews accompanied her coffin wrapped in the Texas flag later, new rows of firefighters saluted again, and their badges bore black bands.
Bretagne will forever be remembered as a 9/11 hero. She is an icon and a light source of what one fantastic dog can accomplish in this world! The story of Bretagne the dog was a powerful reminder of the bravery and selflessness displayed by search and rescue dogs in times of need. Her courage and dedication will never be overshadowed.
